Meet six folks in the feature documentary “Butterflies”
who share the common goal of becoming Internet sensations via YouTube.
Each real-life character in the documentary has made a presence online
with thousands of subscribers following their daily lives and video
blogs.
The Valley Film Festival in Los Angeles, California is presenting “Butterflies” this fall on November 13th, 2010 at 7pm in the CAP theater in Sherman Oaks.
“This opportunity to showcase YouTube on a big screen means that the
traditional and new media are slowly merging” Brym said. “Each
character in the film represents each one of you. The girl next door,
the talented musician, the up and coming actress or the regular guy who
always makes you laugh.”
The film has won the Alan J. Bailey Excellence Award and has been nominated for Best Social Commentary Award 2009 by the AOF International Film Festival. It was also awarded Best Entertainment Doc by the Philadelphia First Glance and received a couple of nominations at Montana Independent Film Festival.
The film premiered in the summer of 2009 on Los Angeles and has since acquired a worldwide distribution by the UK Journeyman Pictures.
Audiences around the world have been following the YouTube story on
their televisions and this screening will for the very first time
present the new broadcast version of the film.

For almost a week now we have been trying to find a good home for the amazing dog I found and so far nobody seems to love her :(
A couple of us decided that her chances might be better if we get her fixed and make sure she has all current shots.
This collection is set up for Ginger, the pup found in North Hollywood (NoHo) in Los Angeles by the metro station. Please donate anything, even if it is just a dollar.

La Femme Film Festival Is A Scam

Terrible and expensive place to screen. For the submission fee of $70, you get a room with a couple of chairs and none of your posters nowhere to be seen. We were also “lucky” enough to have our screening scheduled against the opening party of the festival. Needless to say that nobody had any idea we were showing, besides our friends.
Also needless to say, that there was no effort from the festival organizer to put any attention to our film, because our time slot was in competition with the film crew, that paid huge money to the festival publicist.
During the closing ceremony, we struggled to find parking place, because place dedicated to VIP only was not for us. The parking attendant laughed when we asked and said : “Well, are you a celebrity?” Foolish of us to think that since our film was at the festival, we might have been the VIPs. At that point, we were so upset, that we approached the organizer Ms Leslie La Page to find out what exactly happened with our screening, our posters and her festival. She was very busy standing around carrying a baby, I guess her son…
Upon our approach, she started looking very uncomfortable, claiming she is very busy and cannot talk to us. We did mention we emailed her earlier with no feedback. She started getting more upset, looking for any way out. We left. We didn’t bother to attend award ceremony, that was dedicated to people, who paid thousands of dollars to receive her award.
How does this woman sleep at night? Scamming filmmakers of their money, taking their promotional materials and trashing them right away? If this woman is really a mother, I feel very sorry for the children she will raise. Nothing good comes from family of thieves, liars and con artists. Avoid this place if you are a serious filmmaker. If you film is no good, this place might be a great for you, because for few thousand $, you can buy attention, great screening time, publicity and award. No respect though. That you can only buy with good film.

Final evaluation:
Price: expensive
Perks: some if you have extra $ to pay for them
Media: Ms Leslie has some friends that lent their names to the festival, they are as interested in indie film as I am in farming
Professionalism: appears good until personal contact
Interaction with filmmaker: only with the rich ones

Rating on a scale from 1-10: 3 (at least the “festival” takes place)

Final thought: After receiving emails from other filmmakers that attended La Femme, wanting to stop Ms LaPage from running the festival another year, I realized, that we came out OK. We didn’t pay any additional money besides the submission fee, we didn’t get scammed into her bogus publicist, we didn’t travel across the country to attend this circus. We came out OK, just smarter. Will you?

The film premiered in July 2009 at AOF film festival in LA and signed with UK distributor Journeyman Pictures in October.
The director shot this as her directing debut on a budget put together from her savings and credit cards.

We are done with our East Coast Premiere at NewFilmmakers in NYC and the Award Winning film about YouTube had an amazing response there.

Here are photos from the screening and I am so super excited to have such an amazing night with all the great people!

Next, we are heading to the Montana Independent Film Festival where Butterflies screens on October 25th.
We are going back to Los Angeles presenting Butterflies at La Femme Film Festival in the middle of October and then Philadelphia's First Glance on October 26th.

September is here and Butterflies is ready:)
Sept 5th in the Czech Republic, Sept 11th and 13th and Temecula, California,

Now, anyone can see that it is absolutely impossible for me to make to all these fests.

Butterflies Wins Its 1st Award!

First of all, let me thank all of you for your constant support and if you did make it to our World Premiere, I hope you enjoyed the film.
I would like to start by announcing that Butterflies walked out from AOF International Film Festival with The Alan J. Bailey AOF Award of Excellence for Documentary Filmmaking!!!!
We were also nominated for Best Social Commentary 2009, but this Award went to the amazing Victory of the Underdog. I honestly believe this film fully deserved it as all proceeds from this film go to animal shelters around the USA. Please, do check this film out if you get a chance.
But, back to Butterflies ☺
The Alan J. Bailey Award is given out at the end of the night and I have honestly not expected to be even considered for this honor.
When it was announced, that the award goes to me, Ester Brym for Butterflies, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
I had no speech prepared and I might have not thanked everyone I meant to.
I might have also not said everything that I would wanted to, but the important thing is that Butterflies has been recognized as truly great film.
Everybody who helped me and worked on the film shares this honor.

Lives of YouTube “Weblebrities” Chronicled in Upcoming Documentary
The increasingly popular world of new media has introduced online viewers across the world to a diverse group of individuals in cyberspace. YouTube.com has emerged as one of the leaders to catapult an Average Joe into an instant “Weblebrity” with the stroke of a computer key. Meet six folks in the feature documentary “Butterflies” who share the common goal of becoming internet sensations via YouTube.
Each real-life character in the documentary has made a presence online, with thousands of subscribers following their daily lives and video blogs. “Butterflies” is being presented by AOF International Film Festival, which has nominated the film for Best Social Commentary Award 2009. AOF gives independent filmmakers an opportunity to present their work in front of audiences in Pasadena, CA. Ester Brym, producer, director and editor of the documentary, is thrilled to showcase her work at 8:00 p.m., July 27, 2009 at the Regency Academy Theatre, 673 East Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, California.

“This opportunity to showcase YouTube on a big screen for the very first time will go down in history, because right here, right now, the traditional and new media are merging” Brym said. “Each character in the film represents each one of you. The girl next door, the talented musician, the up and coming actress or the regular guy, who always makes you laugh.”

Butteflies will have its World Premiere much earlier than expected as I was just informed that Action on Film Festival has officially selected it for this years run at the end of July. I will post more info once I have it!!!!
This is great news! Happy 4th of July all and I hope you will make time to come and see the film if you live in the Los Angeles area. The festival takes place in Pasadena.

Butterflies in Reflex

An interview with the director of Butterflies, Ester Brymova will be in the next issue of Reflex, the equivalent of Time magazine in the Czech Republic. The issue goes on sale Thursday and you can also read the article online at www.reflex.cz.

Also, history of YouTube, and short interviews with some of the characters in the film, like LisaNova, DaveDays, Mr Safety or XgobobeanX are part of the article.
